What is Stainless Steel?
We are often asked what is stainless steel? and what makes stainless steel 'stainless'?
'Stainless' is a general name for steels which are iron alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Today stainless steel refers to a whole range of different steel types and grades that are resistant to corrosion and oxidation. The Chromium content of these steels creates a very thin layer of oxide on the surface called the passive layer. This layer prevents further corrosion of the surface and increasing the percentage of Chromium increases resistance to corrosion.
Different grades of stainless steel will contain varying amounts of Carbon, Silicon and Manganese. Other properties are managed by the addition of elements such as Nickel and Molybdenum – these will affect enhanced formability and increased corrosion resistance or strength.
Selection Advice
When choosing a type or grade of steel consider the corrosion resistance requirements of the application or environment, then consider the additional mechanical or physical properties that are needed to achieve the service performance you require.

Stainless Steel 420 Economiser
Stainless Steel 420 is a martensitic grade offering a combination of good corrosion resistance and hardness. The 'Economiser' variant is a cost-effective version ideal for applications where moderate corrosion resistance is acceptable. 420 stainless steel is commonly used for: • Cutlery and knife blades • Surgical instruments • Moulds and dies • Valve components • Shafts and pump parts This grade can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve a hardness of approximately 50 HRC.

Stainless Steel Sheet Grade 304 (Sheet, Plate, Tube, Mesh & Bar)
Stainless steel types 304 and 304L. Type 304 is the most widely used and versatile of the stainless steel grades. It is also known as 18/8 (18% chromium 8% nickel). It is available in a wider range of products, forms and finishes than any other of the 300 grade stainless steels. 304 has excellent forming and welding characteristics. AISI 304 stainless can be deep drawn more severely than Types 301 and 302 without immediate heat softening, a characteristic that has made this grade dominant in the manufacture of drawn stainless steel parts such as sinks, splashbacks and saucepans and other hollow-ware. Type 304 stainless steel also has outstanding welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required to restore the excellent performance of this grade in a wide range of mildly corrosive conditions. Type 304L does not require post-weld annealing and finds extensive use in heavy gauge components where freedom from carbide weld precipitation is often required, including stainless steel 304 sheet. All stainless stock can be delivered mirror polished if required.

Stainless Steel Sheet Grade 316 (Sheet, Plate, Tube, Mesh & Bar)
316 Stainless Steel is commonly used for food processing equipment, and as surgical stainless steel. 316 is also know as marine grade stainless steel due to its higher resistance to chloride corrosion compared to type 304. 316L is an extra low carbon grade of 316, often found in stainless steel watches. Its resistance to chloride attack means it is often selected for use in marine atmospheres. 316Ti includes titanium for heat resistance, a typical application would be flexible chimney liners. 316 stainless steel is a molybdenum-bearing grade. This addition gives the better overall corrosion resistance properties than type 304and higher creep strength at elevated temperatures. All stainless stock can be delivered mirror polished if required, Call for details.
